CHAPTER ELEVEN

Jack jumped to his feet as Eva entered the room. “Eva, this is Mark Lowery. His fiancée was Jenna Caldwell, the young woman who died in the car accident.”

Mark Lowery stood and nodded. “Ms. Currie.”

“I’m so sorry about Ms. Caldwell.”

“Thank you,” Mark said.

Jack swore there were tears in Paige’s eyes. He was scrambling for some way to resolve their predicament without hurting Eva but wasn’t sure how much she had heard. “Where’s Madison?” he asked instead, planning to stall as long as he could.

Eva smiled. “Annie Greer’s birthday party was exhausting. There were so many children and games to play, I was pooped just watching. Poor little Madison was worn out, too. We weren’t in the car five minutes and she was sound asleep. So I carried her into the family room and laid her on the sofa.”

“Thanks for taking her, Eva.”

“I enjoyed every minute of it.” She waved a hand at him, her way of reminding him she didn’t need to be thanked. Jack knew she loved Madison like a granddaughter. As far as he knew Eva had never married, never had any children. Unless Jenna Caldwell had really been Eva’s daughter.

“So,” Eva said, “I overheard my name being mentioned when I walked in.”

Jack cringed, wondering what to say to her. He noticed Lowery fumbling with the white envelope in his hand. Worried Mark Lowery would tell Eva what he suspected, Jack planted himself directly in front of Eva to block her view of the man. “Mr. Lowery stopped by to say they had a memorial service for Ms. Caldwell last week. I know how upset you were over the accident and I didn’t want you reminded of it again. I asked Mr. Lowery not to mention the accident or the service in your presence.”

Eva’s eyebrows lifted as she glanced at Paige who was working her fingers feverishly in her lap and avoiding Eva’s gaze. She then sidestepped Jack and looked past him, apparently at Lowery. “Of course I was upset. I heard the crash and went to get Jack,” she told Lowery. “Then I immediately called 911.”

Jack noticed the tears welling up in her dark brown eyes.

“You must be devastated, Mr. Lowery.”

“Yes, I am. I’ve cleaned out Jenna’s condo, sold or donated most everything, like her furniture and clothing. But I have no idea what to do with her personal things. You know, family photos, a few antiques her parents had left, things like that.”

Mark sighed and shook his head. “She only has an elderly aunt left, and she’s in a nursing home. I haven’t even told her about Jenna. Not that she would understand. She has Alzheimer’s.” He took a long breath. “I was thinking that the personal items should probably go to someone who might appreciate them. Someone who loved Jenna and would like knowing that she had a good life and was loved by her parents.”

Paige interrupted. “I think you should keep the photos and antiques, Mark. I have a feeling Jenna would want for you to hang on to them.
